High-Speed Maths: Multiply Two Three-Digit Numbers (789 × 263)

·

1–2 minutes

Can you work out 789 × 263 in a single line? With the Vedic Maths pattern Vertically and Crosswise, you can. This worked example uses big digits on purpose, so you can see how to handle large carries.

New to the method? Start with Vertically and Crosswise Multiplication, which explains the two-digit pattern and why it works.

The five steps at a glance

The steps are symmetrical: vertical, crosswise, big cross, crosswise, vertical. Work from right to left, and add each carry to the next step.

789 × 263 by vertically and crosswise in five steps: 9 × 3 = 27, write 7 carry 2; 8 × 3 + 9 × 6 = 78, plus 2 = 80, write 0 carry 8; 7 × 3 + 9 × 2 + 8 × 6 = 87, plus 8 = 95, write 5 carry 9; 7 × 6 + 8 × 2 = 58, plus 9 = 67, write 7 carry 6; 7 × 2 = 14, plus 6 = 20. Answer 207,507.

Step by step

StepMultiply and addTotal + carryWriteCarry
1. Right vertical9 × 3 = 272772
2. Crosswise (right two columns)8 × 3 + 9 × 6 = 24 + 54 = 7878 + 2 = 8008
3. Big cross + middle vertical7 × 3 + 9 × 2 + 8 × 6 = 21 + 18 + 48 = 8787 + 8 = 9559
4. Crosswise (left two columns)7 × 6 + 8 × 2 = 42 + 16 = 5858 + 9 = 6776
5. Left vertical7 × 2 = 1414 + 6 = 2020—

Reading the “Write” column from bottom to top: 789 × 263 = 207,507.

Two tips for big carries

  • The last step keeps everything. There is no next place to carry into, so write the whole number — here, 20.
  • Prefer to add carries at the end? Write each step’s carry in a second row, one place to the left, and add the two rows when you finish. You get the same answer — choose whichever feels easier.

Check your answer

A quick estimate catches big mistakes: 789 is about 800 and 263 is about 250, and 800 × 250 = 200,000. Our answer, 207,507, is close — so it is sensible.
